Anxiety

“His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy There’s vomit on his sweater already,
mom’s spaghetti”

– Lose Yourself by Eminem

Here we go again for the umpteenth time.

The heart begins racing, and your stomach clenches up – it feels like the alarm bells are going off, and you don’t have access to the off-switch. The mind starts to race, and the worries start going off repeatedly.

You tell yourself, “Calm down and stop overreacting. It’s just going to the grocery store. That’s it – Relax!”

Concentration seems impossible, and you keep fidgeting. Someone at home tries to talk to you, and you snap at them. “Why am I snapping?” you think. “Stop it!”

Someone says you’re acting mean, and now you feel guilty because you think they’re right. It’s hard not to snap when you’re exhausted. Right? Sleep can help with that, except sometimes it’s hard to sleep when your mind won’t shut off. Ugh.

Mic“So, how do I get rid of it?”

Well, you can’t get rid of anxiety and don’t want to – not entirely. Humans evolved to have anxiety because it has kept our species alive for so long. It’s a built-in safety feature to protect you and those you love. And it’s out of one of the oldest parts of the brain.

You want at least some anxiety levels to alert you if you’re in a dangerous situation or remind you not to forget something important. We sometimes refer to anxiety as your “advisor,” like kings and queens kept advisors by their side. The problem happens when this advisor starts taking over the kingdom that is your life.

Anxiety feels like a car alarm that goes off at the slightest noise or movement when that takeover occurs: loud, distressing, and disruptive. And it starts going off even when there’s no need for it – like when you meet new people, apply for a new job, or even go to the damn grocery store! And you’ll want to avoid all these things if it shuts your advisor up.

At this point, it’s an anxiety disorder. And currently, there’s no known cure.

“So, it’s Hopeless, then?”

Not! Life can get SO MUCH better than it is right now. Anxiety is part of being human, but it doesn’t have to be in charge.

You can experience anxiety and not let it take over your life by learning to let go of the struggle with it.

Letting go of the struggle allows you to return to living your life your way!
